About the Destination: Heredia, Costa Rica
About the Destination
Nestled in the lush Central Valley, Heredia is one of Costa Rica’s most charming and culturally rich cities. Known as the “City of Flowers,” it offers a perfect mix of urban life and tropical tranquility. Just a short drive from the capital, San José, Heredia provides the ideal setting for Spanish immersion — small enough to feel authentic, yet vibrant with daily life, markets, and friendly locals eager to share their culture.
Language
The official language of Costa Rica is Spanish, spoken by nearly the entire population. Costa Ricans — known as “Ticos” — are famous for their clear accent and friendly communication style, making it an excellent environment for students to learn and practice Spanish in real conversations. English is spoken in some tourist areas, but Heredia’s local neighborhoods offer a truly immersive language experience.
Climate
Heredia enjoys a pleasant year-round springlike climate thanks to its elevation in the Central Valley, averaging daytime temperatures between 70–80°F (21–27°C). Mornings are typically sunny and warm, while afternoons may bring light tropical rain — perfect for enjoying the region’s lush greenery. Lightweight clothing, a light jacket, and a raincoat are recommended.
Cuisine
Costa Rican cuisine is simple, fresh, and flavorful, centered around rice, beans, tropical fruits, and local vegetables. Students can expect to enjoy meals such as gallo pinto (rice and beans served with eggs and plantains), casados (a typical plate with rice, beans, salad, meat, and tortillas), and freshly squeezed fruit juices. Sharing homemade meals with a host family is one of the best ways to experience the warmth and authenticity of Costa Rican culture.

What to Expect
This sample itinerary assumes your group arrives Friday and departs the following Sunday.
It’s fully customizable and based on a schedule that has worked well for high school immersion groups.
This itinerary represents our best projection of the group’s schedule. Actual activities may vary based on weather, local availability, and group interest.
Language Learning
The goal of this group immersion program is to improve your fluency in Spanish by expanding vocabulary, gaining confidence in conversation, and applying your skills in real-life situations. At our partner school, Tico Lingo, students participate in dynamic, interactive Spanish classes with native-speaking teachers who make learning fun and relevant.
Outside the classroom, students put their Spanish to the test by ordering fresh fruit at a local mercado, chatting with shop owners, or participating in cultural scavenger hunts and games throughout Heredia. Every moment is designed to help students think and communicate naturally
in Spanish.
Language Pledge
To create a truly immersive experience, students are encouraged to speak only in Spanish throughout the program not just in class, but also with teachers, host families, and fellow students. This commitment helps learners break through the fear of making mistakes and dramatically accelerates fluency.
Homestay
Homestays are coordinated through our trusted local partner, which carefully vets and selects each family based on hospitality, safety, and enthusiasm for cultural exchange. Students live with warm, welcoming Costa Rican families who open their homes and hearts, sharing daily routines, traditions, and meals.
This experience often becomes one of the most memorable aspects of the trip, a time when students truly live the language, form deep connections, and experience Costa Rican life from the inside. Many alumni describe their homestay as the turning point in their Spanish learning journey.
Technology
To encourage full participation and cultural connection, we limit cell phone use during the program. Students are encouraged to disconnect from technology and focus on face-to-face communication and local experiences. Phones can be used for photos and translation when needed, but we promote an environment of mindfulness and immersion. Families will receive regular program updates and students will have opportunities for scheduled calls home.
Physical Activity
This is an active and engaging program! Students should expect to spend most days outdoors, participating in cultural excursions and adventure activities such as white-water rafting, hiking, and exploring local markets and coffee farms. While no special athletic skills are required, participants should bring curiosity, energy, and an adventurous spirit — ready to walk, learn, and explore daily.
Altitude
Heredia sits at an elevation of approximately 3,800 feet (1,160 meters) above sea level, offering a pleasant springlike climate with mild temperatures year-round. Students may notice the thinner air during vigorous activity at first, but most adapt quickly within a day or two.
Accommodations
During the program, students stay in comfortable local homes with their assigned homestay families. Each family provides a private room for one or two students, with simple but cozy furnishings and reliable amenities. All homes are within walking distance of Tico Lingo.
When traveling for excursions (such as the beach trip to Manuel Antonio or the rafting adventure), students stay in safe, family-run lodges and eco-hotels selected for comfort and cultural authenticity.
Meals
Students enjoy home-cooked meals prepared by their host families, featuring fresh, traditional Costa Rican dishes like gallo pinto, casados, tropical fruits, and natural juices. During excursions or cultural outings, meals are shared at local restaurants chosen for their quality and authenticity. Eating together offers a perfect opportunity to practice Spanish and experience Costa Rican hospitality.

Dedicated Program Leader
Every group is assigned a dedicated Program Leader who hosts
a pre-arrival webinar and serves as your go-to contact before,
during, and after the trip. They will also be accompanying you
on the trip to assist you with anything.
